Placekicker Francesco Zampogna says he missed an easy opening field goal from 27 yards against FIU because of "a little lack of focus.""It was definitely my fault – that short should definitely go in," he said.Zampogna made up for the miss with three easy makes later in the game."You just have to regroup after that," he said. "You have a whole another game to play, and I had to kick off also. I had to stay focused, do what I had to do."Zampogna also handled kickoffs late in the game after starting punter Matt Bosher struggled in that area.Zampogna's two kickoff barely landed at the 20."I didn't hit them very well," he said. It's something he ... or someone ... needs to improve entering tomorrow night's game."I wasn't really expecting (to do kickoffs in the game), but when your number's called you have to perform," Zampogna said.Daren Daly had handled kickoffs in the first two games, but Randy Shannon didn't like his long, low line drives. So Bosher got his chance. And Bosher's attempts went high, but short."Neither one of us worked on kickoffs during two-a-days because Daly was mainly the guy," Zampogna said. "Once they named him the guy Bosher went to punting and I went more to field goals."Now Zampogna says he is competing with Bosher and Daly to handle kickoffs in this week's game."A lot of field goal kickers do both," Zampogna said. "It's a mental game. You're running 11 yards (doing kickoffs) as opposed to two. You have to focus a lot more on the distance running to the kickoff. That's something you get used to."Zampogna says he still doesn't feel like his starting placekicking job is safe.He says he continues to share kicks and compete with Daly and Bosher in practices."Absolutely everyone's competing for the jobs," Zampogna said. "You have to perform. As coach Shannon said, the starters can change every week."Of his season so far, Zampogna says, "I'm happy with it. I feel it could be better, there's room for improvement. And that's what we're trying to do, get better every week."
